Tokyo confirmed 30 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Dec. 16, 13 more than the previous Thursday.
The seven-day average of new cases over the week through Dec. 16 came to 21.1, up by 26.3 percent from the figure for the preceding week, metropolitan health officials said.
Three patients were deemed to be in a serious condition and required special breathing equipment. The number was unchanged from the previous day.
No related fatalities were reported for the second day in a row.
