Two men who thought they were only having "innocent fun" by driving on a major Tokyo expressway at night while sitting on the windows of their cars found law enforcement less amused by their antics.
The two drivers were among five people arrested on suspicion of jointly engaging in reckless driving earlier this year on the Metropolitan Expressway in Kawasaki.
According to police, the incident occurred at about 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 22.
Police said the two admitted to the crime, with one telling them, “I never thought this would get blown up into such a big deal.”
Kanagawa prefectural police announced on Nov. 15 that the two men in their 20s living in Chiba Prefecture were arrested for violating the Road Traffic Law.
They are accused of driving with their upper bodies out of the driver’s seat window and sitting on the window frame with their right legs out in the air.
They controlled their vehicles using only their left hands on the steering wheel and their left legs and foot operating the brakes and gas pedal.
Three other people were also arrested as the five used four cars to impair the driving of others by weaving between the lanes of the expressway.
Police sent papers to the prosecutors for the three other individuals on the same charge as the two drivers who were sitting on their car windows.
