The government plans to declare a fourth state of emergency for Tokyo to deal with the novel coronavirus pandemic after pre-emergency measures expire on July 11, sources said.
The state of emergency will be in place through Aug. 22, the sources said.
The decision was made at a meeting held on July 7 involving Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and his Cabinet ministers.
The state of emergency is expected to affect the decision on whether to allow spectators into Tokyo Olympic events. The Opening Ceremony is scheduled for July 23.
