Tokyo logged 673 new COVID-19 cases on July 1, according to metropolitan government officials, as an uptick in new infections in the capital continues.
The number was an increase of 103 over the previous Thursday and marked the 12th straight day the daily tally exceeded that of the same day of the previous week.
Tokyo also reported two deaths from COVID-19 on July 1.
The daily average of cases for the week ending July 1 was 523.1, which represented a 19 percent increase over the previous week.
The three-day average as of June 30 of government-administered COVID-19 tests was 8,946.7.
The capital's number of COVID-19 patients with serious symptoms requiring the use of a ventilator or other equipment to breathe stood at 51, up four from the previous day.
Of the latest cases, 207 patients were in their 20s, 155 in their 30s, 95 in their 40s and 89 in their 50s. Thirty-two were 65 or older.
