OSAKA--Osaka Prefecture reported a record high 55 deaths from COVID-19 on May 11, raising the accumulative death toll during the pandemic to 1,785.
The same day, the prefecture confirmed 974 new infections, pushing the overall count to 91,253.
The previous record for COVID-19 deaths in one day in the prefecture was 50 on May 7.
The prefecture said on May 10 that the number of COVID-19 patients who died at their homes has reached 18. Of them, 17 died during the fourth wave of infections from March to May 7.
Hospital beds for patients in serious condition are now in short supply in the prefecture, and more infected people are dying before they can receive hospital treatment.
