Tokyo broke the record for COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms for the second straight day with 101 cases confirmed on Jan. 3.
Also that day, Tokyo metropolitan government officials said there were 816 new COVID-19 cases, the highest recorded for a Sunday in the capital.
Of the new patients, 214 were in their 20s, 182 in their 30s, 123 in their 50s and 116 in their 40s. There were 96 patients aged 65 and older.
Severe cases are those involving patients who require the use of a ventilator or an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) device, which circulates blood through an artificial lung. The Jan. 3 figure marked an increase of seven from the previous day.
