Tokyo confirmed 480 new cases of the novel coronavirus infections on Dec. 13, a record for a Sunday.
The number of new patients is typically relatively lower on Sundays. The previous high for a Sunday was 418 reported on Nov. 29.
According to the Tokyo metropolitan government, 70 patients had severe symptoms that require the use of a ventilator or an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) device, which circulates blood through an artificial lung, on Dec. 13.
The figure increased from 68 on the previous day and matched the number posted on Nov. 30, which was the highest since the state of emergency declaration was lifted on May 25.
