Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Nov. 9 reiterated his willingness to work with President-elect Joe Biden to further solidify the alliance between Japan and the United States after tweeting a similar message the day before.

“I want to work with the United States to bolster the Japan-U.S. alliance and ensure the peace and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region,” he told reporters.

After congratulating Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris, for their victory in the bitterly contested election, the prime minister underlined the importance of bilateral relations between Tokyo and Washington.

“Japan and the United States are two allies that share the universal values of freedom and democracy,” he said.

As for his plans to make a conference call or visit the United States to meet with Biden, who will be sworn in on Jan. 20, Suga said nothing has been decided at this stage.

But he added Tokyo will coordinate with Washington over when talks between the two leaders are possible.
