IBUSUKI, Kagoshima Prefecture--Instead of a paint brush, two men used a high-pressure washer to create a work of art depicting characters from a popular Japanese fairy tale on a heavily stained seawall here.
The mural that is wowing residents depicts a fisherman and a turtle--two main characters of a popular Japanese fairy tale.
The men undertook the art project to lift the spirits of a seaside city that have been dampened due to the new coronavirus pandemic. They are among a group of people working to help revitalize local communities.
The mural portrays Urashima Taro, the fisherman who returns centuries later to his hometown only to find he is out of place after he was taken to the underwater Palace of Dragon King as gratitude for rescuing a turtle.
The mural, 3.5 meters high and 16 meters long, also depicts hibiscus, the flower of the city.
The men finished the images in three days by adeptly manipulating a high-pressure sprayer to depict the characters in varying shades.
