Tokyo saw daily new infections with the novel coronavirus fall to 188 on July 19 after the tally reaching nearly 300 over the past three days.
The capital reported 290 new cases on July 18, following a daily record of 293 on July 17 and 286 on July 16.
The Tokyo metropolitan government on July 15 raised its alert for the novel coronavirus pandemic to the highest level of four following a sharp increase in new infections.
Metropolitan government officials said people in their 20s and 30s account for about 70 percent of new infections in July, but the numbers of those infected have also increased in other age brackets.
The percentage of infections originating from nightlife establishments, such as host clubs, has fallen slightly.
“We have seen new infections through other routes, such as families and workplaces as well as people dining out together,” a metropolitan government official said.
