Tokyo reported more than 100 new COVID-19 infections for the second straight day on July 3, with younger people accounting for the majority of the new patients.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said at a news conference that there were 124 new infections on July 3 in the capital, following 107 the previous day.

About 70 percent of the new cases were individuals between 20 and 40.

Koike again urged residents in the capital to refrain from visiting entertainment districts at night, especially congested establishments that are not well ventilated and where customers and staff come into close contact.

Of the latest COVID-19 cases, 50 were individuals who worked at bars and other businesses in the Shinjuku district where they lavished attention on their guests. Seven new cases came from Ikebukuro, another major entertainment district in the capital.

Tokyo reported 55 new infections on June 24, the first time the daily figure topped 50 in 50 days.

The tally dipped under 50 the following day to 48, but it has since been above 50 every day, including 54 on June 26, 57 on June 27, 60 on June 28, 58 on June 29, 54 on June 30, and 67 on July 1.

Now, the figure has been in triple digits for two consecutive days.
