A man arrested after a break-in at a Tokyo supermarket told police he did so because he was famished after losing work due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The man in his 60s was caught red-handed with a backpack filled with 20 or so items, including instant ramen noodles, rice, cabbage and alcohol. The items were worth about 10,000 yen ($93).
Sources with the Metropolitan Police Department said the man, who claimed to be a resident of the capital's Shinjuku Ward, was arrested early April 23 after a security alarm sounded around 2 a.m. at a supermarket in Toshima Ward.
The man was arrested on suspicion of breaking and entering and theft. He told police he was a day laborer, but work had ground to a halt following the coronavirus outbreak.
Police referred the case to prosecutors.
