A heavy snowfall warning was issued for western Tama and northern and southern parts of Tokyo on March 29 after snow began falling in the morning due to a low pressure system and extremely cold air enveloping the Kanto region.

The maximum amount of snow in the 12 hours since it began falling is forecast to be 20 centimeters in western Tama and 10 cm for the northern and southern areas and 8 cm for the capital's 23 wards, according to the Meteorological Agency.

In mountainous areas of Tochigi Prefecture, snowfall of up to 30 cm is expected.

The lowest temperature recorded on the day in central Tokyo was 1.3 degrees and 0.4 degree in Ome and 0.3 degree in Okutama, both in western Tokyo.

Parts of operations on the JR Ome Line have been suspended since morning due to snowfall.

The agency is advising cars and pedestrians to be on the alert for freezing roads.
