SINGAPORE--The Singapore government will require travelers coming from Japan and ASEAN member countries to self-isolate for two weeks after arriving in the country amid the spread of the new coronavirus.

The expansion of travel restrictions covers anyone who has traveled to the countries in the past two weeks and also includes Britain and Switzerland.

Singapore announced the restrictions on March 15, following an increase in the number of confirmed cases across the globe.

The measures go into effect on March 16 at 11:59 p.m. local time.

Travelers will be refused entry to Singapore if they have not booked a stay of 14 days at a hotel or other accommodation, the city-state said.

Nationals of Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries who do not have a long-term visa issued by the Singapore government will need to submit information on their health and obtain approval from the government in advance.

Singapore has already banned entry to travelers from China, South Korea, Italy, Spain and other countries.
