Snow and sleet are forecast for wide areas of the Kanto and Koshin regions, including Tokyo’s 23 wards, through Jan. 28, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The agency is urging people to prepare for traffic disruptions and frozen road surfaces and is warning residents in mountainous areas that heavy snowfalls could continue into the night of Jan. 28.
The forecasts are based on the influences from a low pressure system and cold air mass.
According to the agency’s forecast as of 5 a.m. on Jan. 27, the amount of snow over 24 hours until 6 a.m. on Jan. 28 is expected to be: between 15 and 30 centimeters in Yamanashi Prefecture and Nagano Prefecture; between 3 and 20 cm in Kanagawa Prefecture; and between 5 and 15 cm in Saitama Prefecture and Tochigi Prefecture.
In Tokyo, 10 cm of snow is expected to cover the western Tama area, while the northern and southern Tama areas could receive 5 cm over that period.
Around 1 cm of snow is expected to blanket the 23 wards of central Tokyo, but the snowfall could become heavier if the temperature drops, the agency said.
The snow is expected to gradually become rain on the flat plains of the two regions after the morning of Jan. 28.
