“Walking To Space Together” by Inuhiko Doronoda won the Cartoon Grand Prize 2024.
The annual award reflects the views of bookstore employees and other manga enthusiasts.
Published by Kodansha Ltd., the story focuses on the friendship between senior high school boys named Kobayashi, a delinquent, and Uno, a new transfer student.
They find it difficult to live among “normal” people.
Uno is hopeless at multitasking and sensitive to loud noises. He always carries a notebook with tips on how to deal with panic attacks in case he has one.
Kobayashi makes simple mistakes in his part-time job and has an inferiority complex.
Kobayashi learns from Uno and begins to make efforts to change.
Their problems are not diagnosed in the story because the author wanted readers to engage in it in a non-judgmental manner.
“I think it will be the most natural for you to read it from the realistic point of view, or rather, from your own point of view,” she said during the awards ceremony held in Tokyo on April 2.
The award, the 17th in a series, is hosted by the Cartoon Grand Prize executive committee.
It covers manga works, including digital comics, released during the previous year that have no more than eight volumes. The winners are selected through a voting process.
Hiromu Arakawa’s “Daemons of the Shadow Realm” (Square Enix Co.) placed second, while Akihito Sakaue’s “Kanda Gokuracho Shokunin Banashi” (Stories of craftsmen in Kanda-Gokuracho) (Leed Publishing Co.) came in third.
